Why do Fashion Designers Stray Away from Pearls?

Have you ever wondered why we see so little pearls on catwalks? Pearls are one of the most feminine and universally flattering gemstones and yet they often get a cold shoulder from the fashion designers of this world. Naturally there are notable exceptions, such as Chanel, but overall most fashion power houses will readily choose sparkly diamonds or bold-colored sapphires, rubies, or emeralds over delicate and shimmery pearls.

I have given this a lot of thought, and I finally settled on red carpet events as at least one of the guilty parties. Why, you ask? Let me explain.

On one hand, we have flash-hungry celebrities that want to shine during such events. Figuratively, yes, but mostly they want to literally exude sparkle from every earlobe, finger, neckline, or toe. They want to be seen and admired. They work closely with fashion designers to put together head-turning outfits and accessories in the hope that they’ll help to maximize their media presence. On the other hand, outfits seen at the Oscars, Grammy’s, or MTV Awards, just to mention three, all set the tone for the current and upcoming fashion trends, so designers produce their trend-setting jewelry pieces to be shown off during such events. Again, this means most of them are more likely to create over-the-top, daring, and highly visible pieces (read: *Bling*Bling* ;o)

Unfortunately, one of the easiest ways of attracting the general public’s attention – you and me! - or that of photographers to begin with, is to wear something bold and/or sparkly that screams big money. As often as not, the resulting jewelry pieces   are not feminine, maybe not even flattering - but definitely loud and audacious. As for the pearls, well… their delicate shine suffers and their beautiful colors tend to disappear when overpowered by the strong flashes of today’s cameras, so they are not as photo-attractive on the red carpet as their more sparkly and colorful alternatives. Also, from a designer’s point of view, pearls are more difficult to work with because their special sheen, voluptuous forms, and ethereal appeal require more creativity in marrying them with modern and daring styles. In consequence, the fashion scene has fallen in love with the fire of diamonds and the boldness of rubies. Don’t get me wrong, I love diamonds and colored gemstones too - but I would love to see more pearls on today’s catwalks.

So if you are a designer and reading this: Hi there! Please include pearls in your fashion repertoire. We love them dearly and they love us back even more. I dare you, show me one woman who doesn't look good in pearls!

PS. Luckily, I have noticed some changes in this bling-fever. Details in our next blog post :o)

“Medusa Earrings” by Katey Brunini
(Wedding Day Pearls 1st winner)
Cultured Pearl Association of America has recently announced the winners of the 2012-2013 International Design Competition. We were so excited to see the winning designs!

This annual competition judges the quality and appeal of pearl jewelry in 8 categories. They include the general President's Award, the Luster Award for the most marketable pearl design, the Designer's Award recognizing the most imaginative and daring designs, the Brilliance Award for bringing out the best of pearl color beauty, the Orient Award for designs waking up the love for pearls in a pearl-indifferent audience, the perception-shifting and classic-redefining Visionary Award, the Fashion Award for off-the-runway looks, and finally the Wedding Day Pearls Award.

Naturally, we also picked our favorites. We were charmed by two pearl rings. First one, Evelyn Huang's "Ocean Lullaby", seduced us with its amazing gray pearl that is beautifully set with blue gemstones that accentuate its cool shades. The second one, Jorge Adeler's “Ying – Yang”, has an amazing organic nautilus-like symmetry that captivated our attention from the very first sight.

Congratulations to this year's winners!

Chanel + Pearls = ♡♡♡

Chanel’s love affair with pearls has been ongoing for decades. Coco Chanel was one of the biggest lovers of Nature’s gift to women. She used to say that a woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls.

All Cameras on Pearls

Pearls has been recognized as one of the most beautiful jewels in the world. Shimmery and lavish, they provide also a great inspiration to stage costume designers. We found two beautiful examples of pearl-themed attires that are just perfect for the silver screen shows.

The designer calls himself the creator of jewel gowns. His stunning dress made entirely of pearls is a wonderful example of a stage costume that greatly underlines feminine beauty. It reminds me of Josephine Baker's costumes from the early 20th century.

Pearl Winners: AGTA Spectrum Awards 2011

There is nothing more rewarding for jewelry designers than happy wearers of their beautiful pieces. Sometimes this recognition comes with tons of advertising and huge billboards sprinkled around large cities worldwide. Often, however, talented beginners and smaller workshops of the jewelry industry cannot afford to hire Kate Moss to strike a pose with their newest ring or bracelet. In such times, industry awards can be very helpful.

AGTA Spectrum Awards is an annual natural colored gemstone and cultured pearl jewelry design competition. Organized by American Gemstone Trade Association, it was first launched in 1984. Since then, it has gained the reputation of being one of the finest jewelry and gemstone competition in the world.

Participants are evaluated for their creativity, workmanship, and innovation. Winners set the standards of excellence for the entire industry and gain extraordinary exposure of their work.

This year's winner in the category "Best Use of Pearls", Llyn L. Strelau from Canada conquered the jury's hearts with her sculpture entitled "Who Are You". The piece, featuring Freshwater, South Sea and Akoya pearls, has been inspired by "Alice in Wonderland".  A new interpretation of Blue Caterpillar that I particularly enjoy!

In the "Classical" category, the prize went to Christopher Duquet. His metropolis-inspired white gold ring with a single black South Sea pearl is a contemporary interpretation of traditional staple jewelry. The best place to wear it may be in Paris of course, for its structural resemblance to the Eiffel Tower.

Laura Jackowski-Dickson was awarded with manufacturing honors in the "Evening Wear" category for her stunning gold cuff. The piece features two South Sea cultured pearls, four Freshwater pink cultured pearls, and diamonds to compliment the soft gleam of pearls with a sharp sparkle of faceted stones.

I’m really happy to see that pearl jewels are changing and becoming bolder. New, daring designs, contemporary outlooks, and playfulness of associations are all signs of a new, more adventurous approach towards pearls. No offence to the white single strand, but it’s time to make some room for some fresh designs!

Extreme boldness

The pearl market never ceases to amaze me. We have recently bought some breath-taking freshwater keshi pearls during one of the visits to the pearl vendors...

"Come, take a look, I have something really special. They arrived today" - with a mysterious smile on his face, A. insisted that I follow him to the adjacent showroom. The pearls he showed me were truly spectacular! Very smooth, incredibly iridescent, and had 20+ mm in diameter. A real treat!

We picked few strands in white and golden peach colors. Just take a look at these in comparison to our regular-sized keshis:

Nautical Pearls

The nautical style has always been one of my favourites. Clean and simple lines, flattering silhouettes, stripe dresses, and sailor shorts exposing nicely tanned legs suit so many of us! In jewellery, this style has most often been represented by multiple interpretations of rope knots, anchors, and sea shells. But... how many more anchors, tiny boats, or two-toned beads can our jewellery box handle?

Inspired by the trend for Summer 2010, we decided to give a different look to nautical jewellery. This time, stripes are being incorporated into the main theme of the piece of jewellery. These dangle pearl earrings in silver are adorned with eight blue apatite gemstone beads to imitate our beloved stripes. We named them Ligea, which means "Clear-Toned", after one of the Sirens described in Greek mythology.

If you are looking for something that discreetly hints the nautical trend of the year, these pearl earrings would be my choice. Pair them with monochromatic tops, white shorts, and straw wedge sandals for a simple and classy look. A simple blue dress and frilly sandals will also provide a good match:

Utopian necklace

Immerse yourself in nostalgia for simpler life, innocent and untroubled. An overwhelming warm feeling evoked by golden and copper overtones of paintings depicting flourishing and rustic Golden Age or idyllic Arcadia is taking over our dreams.

Inspired by utopian images from the past, we have designed this pearl necklace to remind ourselves of the beauty of life. Soft and golden tones of ninety-one shimmery and round freshwater pearls symbolize the ripeness of summer apples picked from the tree. Do you still remember their warm sweetness taking over your senses? Eight pink gold-plated silver rings are the embodiment of the circle of life. Do you still recall the gentle touch of the morning on your skin? Her name is Alicia. A noble but dreamy girl; radiant, gentle, and truthful.

Immerse yourself in nostalgia for simpler life, innocent and untroubled.

Blushing pendants

The prevailing trend for this summer is peachy, blushing, and fresh as a morning dew. Many women really enjoy this trend, it gives them the liberty to envelop themselves in flowing fabrics, indulge in soft colours, and let their inner feminine glow shine though their translucent make-ups.
