Movie-inspired Pearl Comeback
The comeback of pearls has been announced many times over
the past few years. Every now and then, we witness a short-lived fling between
fashion designers and our beloved pearls.
This time pearls might be staying with us for little longer because of two
recent Hollywood productions, Anna Karenina and The Great Gatsby.
While set in two different periods in history, with Anna
Karenina living in 19th century Russia and Gatsby partying in early
20th century US, both movies emphasize pearls as the most feminine
and sought-after jewel for the ladies of their times.
The pearl jewelry in Anna Karenina was designed by Chanel.
Keira Nigthley’s beautiful pearl earrings and necklaces played an important
role in the story. One of my favorite moments in the movie shows Anna Karenina
frightened for life of her lover, Count Vronsky, when he falls off his horse
during the race. In the scene, we hear horses’ hooves pounding against the
ground and we see Anna’s fan beating and beautiful pearl earrings swinging in
the same rhythm. Anna is observing the race from the dark and we can only see
her frightened beautiful face and two gleaming and shivering droplets of pearl
earrings that intensify the loaded emotions of the scene.

In The Great Gatsby, pearls are associated with the wealth and
opulence of the era. Carey Mulligan, playing Daisy Buchanan, reveals that she
built her spotlight-hungry character based on her observations of the Kardashian family. Indeed,
Daisy Buchanan is known for her weakness for beautiful things, so it’s no
surprise that jewelry and clothes play an important part in building her
character, just like in Kardashian’s ultra-material world. Tiffany & Co, famed for their
breath-taking Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewels, were a perfect match to design a special collection for this movie set in the Jazz Age.

Thanks to both movies, more celebrities and designers have
rediscovered pearls as their jewel of choice. Let’s hope it’s not just another
short-lived romance…

Pick of the Week: Gold-plated Pearl Hoops
Ashanti, our pick of the week, are feminine and lightweight pearl hoop earrings.
Adorned with 6 lustrous tiny white pearls on each side, these earrings are a great summer accessory with a bohemian twist. Their hand-crafted filigree design will surely amp up the opulence of everyday separates and complement the boho luxe of vivid-colored strapless dresses. The earrings are made of gold-plated sterling silver and are anti-allergenic.
For advice on how to wear hoop earrings, we have prepared a fool-proof guide on how to wear hoops like a lady, but here are few propositions on how to match Ashanti (at US$ 29 only!) with your favorite outfits for this summer.

Donna Karan Embraces Pearls This Fall
A very unusual relationship has recently been formed. Donna Karan, a New York based designer, abandoned her beloved African beads in favor of… pearls! For many years she has strongly favored the organic and sculptural jewels of Robert Lee Morris, but this year she departed from the tribal trend in favor of the ladylike look of pearls.

Karan’s fall collection, “Pearls of Wisdom”, is very
feminine and wearable. Although the collection did not wow the fashion critics,
it still had many great outfits and the taupe and gray ensembles fit well into
the feminine trend of the season. Especially her pearl necklaces, single or
multiple strands but always in the choker or princess length, adding great
finishing touches to these looks. The pearls are large, ranging from purple to
golden and silver, and can be worn with any type of neckline.

We are happy to see designers embracing pearls this season. It
is time we put aside those heavy slave-like chain necklaces and prisoner cuffs
and returned to the understated and feminine side of our fashion accessories!

Keep Your Hoops in the Loop
Hoop earrings never really went out of fashion. They just
change sizes. This season, they are particularly gutsy, featuring barbed wire and
feather-like designs, just to name a couple.
A staple in our jewelry boxes, a pair of hoops can take many
forms. Plain or embellished, small or large, round or oval, they all can be
made in any color and with any type of material. They are almost universally
flattering. Simple and small they become a great addition to office wear, medium
with a few embellishments they can greatly complement a casual jeans and tee
ensemble.
The larger they get, though, the more they are prone to accessory
overkill. We compiled a list of expert advice on how to avoid the “Hoochie Mama”
look and enjoy hoops in their all-around splendor.

Honeysuckle Pink
Have you noticed that each year has its official color? Last year we were diving in the coolness of the turquoise. This year it's the honeysuckle. Vibrant. Poised. Daring.
This delightful reddish pink makes us think of carefree days of spring and summer as it produces a healthy glow on our skins when worn by both men and women. It’s eye-catching and uplifting hue works well for day and night in women’s accessories. Naturally, we find its alternative in pearls. Deep pink or lavender pearls provide a more toned down alternative to the vibrant honeysuckle, complementing it in a much understated way:

Pearl Couture
From time to time, big names of haute couture go crazy on pearls. We have collected few most prominent examples for pearl fashion for you to enjoy and comment on!
Princess Diana's "Elvis Dress"
Princess Diana loved her pearls and she wore them very often. Known for her great sense of humor, Diana named one of her favorite gowns, encrusted with pearls, the "Elvis dress" because of its rich adornment and a high collar. The dress has been made by Catherine Walker in 1989 for Diana to wear during an unofficial visit to Hong Kong. Nowadays, the dress can be admired in Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Undull the gray, wake the beige up
This Fall we get to choose between grays and nudes in our clothing color palettes. These are always safe bets for any occasion, but we have to be careful so that they do not become too safe!
If you want to invest in one piece only, I would go for pearl stud earrings, but definitely not the white ones. I would pick a pair that is outrageously large, screamingly bold, and shockingly golden! Take a look at our two examples of how to wear these beautiful pearl earrings:
Autumn Sobriety by Pearlbuzz featuring cashmere tops
Snugly Chic by Pearlbuzz featuring a patent leather handbag
The possibilities are endless. After all, we will never have enough of pearl-fect stud earrings!

Dangerously Feminine for Halloween
The Halloween is close and we should think about picking the best outfits for the night. But what to do if you don't feel like becoming a pumpkin for the night? There is still a dark princess option available, that, naturally, incorporates black (oh, but of course, what other color would be better?) pearls into the outfit.
Dark fringes, lace, and ruffles of the dress and shoes nicely hint the vampire trend of the year, an animal print clutch in orange brings this extra claw to it (while still remaining in the pumpkin-colored universe of Halloween), but it is the pearl earrings that polish the entire look to make it dangerously feminine.
And what are you planning to wear to your Halloween party?

Underwater Beauties
Last Sunday one of the Seoul's new department stores stunned the world of fashion with its unconventional approach to presenting a new collection by Park Sul-nyeo. Models were presenting mesmerizing gowns inspired by traditional Korean's hanbok dresses.... under water! The show was surreal and ethereally beautiful with vibrantly colored fabrics gracefully dancing around mermaid-like models...

Late Summer Accessories
The summer might be almost over, but our summer moods keep on feeding our style cravings. This year's hit frocks, shorts and denim, are a great match in a city setting. Especially if they come together complemented with the new fling of street fashion - the Oxford shoes. Finally something for those who love strolling across the town without risking an ankle sprain because of the 6-inch heels!
Bold color juxtapositions and over-the-top necklaces spare us the boredom of looking as our younger brothers. I am throwing in some golden pearl studs for style statement and a purse belt for convenience.

The Art of Stacking
It has been already for several seasons that designers all over the world encourage us to pile up our favorite jewelry pieces: pendants, necklaces, rings, or bracelets. The more, the better, the more colors and shapes, the better. Beware, it's very easy to go overboard with a style like this!
Personally, I would not try to follow styles presented in fashion magazines to the letter. Everyday wearing of 20 cocktail rings and 15 statement bracelets in one go is not particularly practical or comfortable. I am more of Coco Chanel's adept: before going out, one should remove one piece of jewelry.
You can transfer the style to your casual wardrobe though. Begin with the easiest: wear three pendants, each on a separate chain of different length. These will add lightness and femininity to any outfit:
Bracelets are also easy to stack: choose different colors of pearls or mix them with simple silver bangles and faceted gemstones to achieve a textured look:

My advice is to bet on one type of jewelry: if you stack rings, forget the bracelets. If you pile up necklaces, make them the focal point of your outfit and skip the rings. But above all: have fun!

Smart Classy
Sometimes we wish we could splurge on clothes and accessories just like celebrities do. Stilettos from Louboutin, dress from Prada, fancy pearl earrings from Cartier... There is one thing we should still remember though: style does not have the price tag! We can easily reproduce different expensive styles and look even better than our inspirations. Here is one of many options, themed around a jewel-coloured cocktail dress, with price tags showing the total price for each set:
The same rule applies to more casual outfits, just like this one, ideal for a summer pool party:

Every cloud has a silver lining
With Hong Kong's rain season in its peak, we are tempted to compromise on style and choose flip flops over heels and oversized rain coats over frilly tops. We don't have to! Here is a rainy weather-inspired set incorporating cute shorts, transparent Wellington boots, and silver-coloured pearl bracelet. Rain can also be our style inspiration!

Floral prints & pearls
Denim is back and so are the floral prints. Designers like Ralph Lauren take us back to our careless childhood days and offer authentic and laid-back compositions combining natural-coloured leather, cowboy-like bleached jackets, and frilly, girly dresses. Topped up with a chunky gemstone bracelet and dangle earrings, the proposition for this summer is fresh and touchingly casual.

Summer Cocktail
There is nothing better than going out on hot summer nights! We show off our tanned skin, seduce with sun-brightened locks and gloss-tinted lips.
Choosing a nice dress to a summer night cocktail is a part of success. Picking the right jewellery will make us stand out in the sun-kissed crowd. This year's trend is big and bold, so dare to go for these large, round, and shiny pearls! And why not getting them in black? After all, black is the perfect finish to looks that show off some skin.
